Law and Legal: Locating Articles

Resources for law and legal research

What are Periodicals?

Periodicals are published at regular intervals throughout the year such as a magazine, journal, or newspaper:

  • Newspaper: A newspaper is a collection of articles about current events usually published daily. It is a great source for local information.
  • Magazine: A magazine is a collection of articles and images about diverse topics of popular interest and current events. Usually these articles are written by journalists or scholars and are geared toward the average adult.
  • Journal: A journal is a collection of articles usually written by scholars in an academic or professional field. An editorial or peer board reviews articles to decide whether they should be accepted.

Finding Articles Using Library Databases

The El Camino College Library provides access to specialized tools (databases) where you can find digital versions of articles that typically are not freely available through Google or other search engines. Some databases cover a variety of subject areas, while others are more specialized.

Step 1:  From the homepage of the Library's website, select Library Databases (A -Z).

Step 2: Use the drop-down menus to see a selection of databases by subject area or to go directly to a specific database.  For example, choose Business & Law.  Link to the Database Descriptions page to see information about the type of content accessible from each database.

undefinedStep 3:  Once you select the database you wish to search, be sure to use the available search options to help narrow your results.  For example, you can limit to articles published during a specific date range, coming from scholarly peer-reviewed journals, or provide the full-text of the article.
