OneSearch: Using the Library Discovery Platform

This guide provides instruction for accessing library print and online collection materials through the OneSearch discovery tool.

Performing a Basic Search

You can conduct a basic search to find items by keyword, title, subject or author. The default option is to search by keyword (search term).

Step 1: Type in your search terms

Fill in the search box where it initially says "search anything" with your keyword(s). Your search can be anything from the topic you are searching on to the author or title of a specific book. Click the magnifying glass to submit your search.

The OneSearch search bar with the keywords "privacy rights" inserted.

Step 2:  Review Your Results

Review the results of available sources. You can see how many results you initially have near the top of the results page (pictured in red box).  These came up because your keyword appears somewhere within the record of the item (you'll see it highlighted in yellow). You will also see the format of each source listed (e.g. book, article, video, etc.).

Step 3:  Refine Your Results

Use the filtering options on the left-hand side to better refine your results in a variety of ways including these popular filters:

  • Resource Type - narrow to books, articles, videos, etc. Click on "show more" to see all the options.
  • Availability - select "held by library" for physical materials or  "available online" for digital materials accessible from a library database
  • Subject - specify from what disciplinary "lens" you are exploring your topic
  • Publication Date - choose a date range of published materials to explore. Some topics require using the most current information while other subjects may be viewed from a historical perspective.
  • Sort By - select to view your results by relevance, date, title or author

Step 4: View and Access an Item

Click on any title of an item to open up the record of resource, which will provide a full description, relevant subject headings, and information on where the item can be found.

Print Books: Check the availability. If the item is available, you'll want the call number to find the item in the library. To the left of the call number, you'll also see what floor and room within the Library the item is located.

Book record listing the availability of the title and its location in the Library.

Online Books, Articles and Videos:: Look for "full text availability" for links to use for accessing the item. If there are multiple links, you can use any of the options to access it.  Click on the link to open up the item in the database where it is located.

Note: If searching from off campus, you will be prompted to login with your standard ECC email & password to access online library collections.
